Search Engine Optimization (Organic Traffic)
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the science of making your web pages search engine-friendly. Since different search engines have different sets of rules governing what constitutes "friendliness," site optimization can be a daunting task. "Organic" is term used for the Holy Grail of site driving traffic to your site without needing to resort to pay-per-click schemes.
When it comes right down to it, it is unrealistic to try and rank for EVERYTHING all at once. It is also unrealistic to try to rank for single-word terms and popular two-word terms. Keyword packing can result in over-optimization penalties.
Fortunately, it can be fairly easy to rank for two and three keyword sets that are peculiar to your market niche. By following strict rules about proper meta-tag useage and onsite copywriting you can ensure that your pages are the friendliest in your niches so when you take the next step and build your inbound links, you stand a good chance of dominating your niche.
Black-Hat SEO
Some folks look for ways to try to game the system, like packing keywords into tiny text the same color as the page background. My advice: DON'T! You are far better off learning the rules and following them. Believe it or not, it is possible to rank without using black-hat SEO to cheat. There are penalties for using black-hat.
Offsite Optimization (Link Bait, etc.)
The other half of the site traffic equation is what I call the popularity contest. In other words, how many sites point to yours. It used to be the case that you could simply trade links and increase your page rank, but now search engines are smarter. Now offsite optimization consists of cultivating inbound-only relevant links.
